Dancing Leaves

Here’s another view of our Climbing Tree.
This beautiful little maple tree is in our front yard and these radiantly red leaves have fallen to the ground in the past month.
Remember as a child watching the leaves fall to the ground, dancing in the gusty wind? And then trying to catch them?
Last Thurdsay was the perfect leaf catching day here in our backyard so we ran and danced and caught leaves and made wishes with each successful catch.
This brought back such found memories of my childhood.
This morning, I found this wonderful little poem in a book called Autumn**.
The Wind and the Leaves
1) ‘Come, little leaves said the wind one day,
Come o’re the meadow with me and play;
Put on your dresses of red and gold,
Summer is gone and the days grow cold.’
2) Soon as the leaves heard the wind’s loud call,
Down they came fluttering, one and all;
Over the fields they danced and flew,
Singing the soft little songs they knew.
3) Dancing and whirling the little leaves went
Winter had called them, and they were content,
Soon, fast asleep on their earthy bed,
The snow laid a coverlet over their heads.
The colors, smells, warmth of the last days of Autumn are so beautiful and I can’t wait to get outside and enjoy them!

glad you found it! I love the season changes too. For a while, the fall kind of got me down, but now I am just enjoying every minute of this change… being with kids through the experience really has changed my perspective.
I love that you make wishes for each leaf that you catch! I’m so glad that you shared this poem. I was just thinking today about looking for an autumn poem for my toddler, who loves to rhyme- great timing!

susan- my son also believes the snow is coming… but he asked for the snow in July.. isn’t it wonderful how the children love the seasons!
Yeah! The waldorf early childhood books have lots of wonderful rhymes for small children- and they are all so fun and nature oriented!

Fall or winter, I’m not sure which I’m in. What I do know is that I love the poem you chose. You have a wonderful way with words Shannon – Dancing Leaves (so eloquent).
When the leaves began to fall I was feeling sad and not looking forward to winter, but now the trees look so elegant, so beautiful and majestic. I feel blessed rather than sad.
